For example, if we’re choosing between two job candidates, one with a quantified performance score and the other described as having strong teamwork skills, we’re likely to favour the candidate with the numerical rating—even if teamwork is the critical attribute for the role. The study, which involved over 23,000 participants across 21 experiments, demonstrated that this bias occurs in various contexts, including hiring, charitable donations, and policy decisions. When one dimension of a choice was presented numerically and another descriptively, participants consistently favoured the option that excelled on the quantified dimension, even when this preference didn’t align with their stated priorities.

The Real-World Example: The Myth of Blue Zones

One compelling illustration of quantification fixation can be found in the fascination with “blue zones,” regions thought to harbour unusually high numbers of centenarians. These areas, such as Sardinia in Italy and Okinawa in Japan, have inspired books, lifestyle brands, and a burgeoning industry selling tips and products for longevity. However, recent research by Saul Justin Newman of University College London casts doubt on the validity of these claims. His findings suggest that much of the data supporting the existence of blue zones is flawed, with many centenarian records stemming from bad record-keeping, errors, or even fraud.

For instance, in Japan, government audits revealed that thousands of supposed centenarians were no longer alive, their records sustained by families seeking to collect pensions. In Greece, a significant percentage of centenarian claims were found to be made up. Despite these revelations, the allure of numerical data—like a region's high number of centenarians—continues to captivate audiences and overshadow the messy realities of aging and record-keeping.

Quantification fixation plays a significant role here. The numbers provide a clear and seemingly authoritative narrative, which is easier to digest than the more complex social, historical, and economic factors that influence longevity.
